Personally I don't like using them because they have too many colors and I'd rather put it down myself.

I use them to limit the palette! It's easier to keep the shading the same shades of gray for light/midtones/dark, and then go back over per area with a color ramp (the program I like to use has a 'constant' setting, which means no gradient transitions) or just smack it down to get the idea of where to put the shadows in the first place before cleanup and beautifying.

Oh neat. I've never tried that. I'll have to look into it. I'm just used to replacing colors once I get the shapes down.

This is exactly the same concept, just non-destructive.

Ha. Those sneaky lil bastards. I always seem to miss one when making an animation.

Sorry for my slow replies! As long as the end results are pixel, I don't mind what method you're using to achieve it :D
Sounds like you have some fun techniques going on

I haven't even tried animation, yet.

No worries, Jolly! Yes, I like to combine media to get new techniques. Color ramps, angle maps, masks, and dither textures are my go-to! It's just been over a year since I've done pixels; there was an update on the program I like to use that makes all of this totally painless to employ.

In the 3D community, they generally refer to this kind of method NPR (non-photorealistic rendering) if you want to look into it yourself. Blender 3D is free!

Do you have any examples of the outcome? I'd love to see what it looks like.

Well I'm excited to see what you achieve! <3

I've tried fiddling around on blender in the past and honestly couldn't wrap my brain around it xD
Part of the problem was, at the time, my pc wasn't strong enough so functions weren't... functioning lol Then crash.
it'd be fun to learn now that I have a powerful pc, if I just take the time to practice!

Oof yeah when the PC not quite strong enough and it sounds like a jet taking off.

Yeah lmao
glad I dont have that issue anymore!
I used to run off of 8gb ram and even CSP would lag a bunch. I draw on high res haha

No samples on this computer since my old one died, but I'll be remaking all my stuff tonight, which I've wanted to do for awhile, now, anyway. I can get you samples from other artists, though!

This is a particularly good one by filsd on blendswap:

You'll be happy to note that Blender's had a massive update. The most relevant is the ability to convert any material into a color node, that you can then fiddle around with via color ramp--per material, not just compositor!

I think filsd's method involves the shrink/grow method, followed by some color ramp cleanup, but I have yet to receive confirmation. I really should just download some of their files and check for myself, but I don't really want their exact style, little chunky for my tastes. I know for a fact they use freestyle to line, though.

Starting from 3D seems like more work to me. XD It's an interesting style though. I can see the appeal especially for animating.

Well, I'm not too sure how all those things work, but if I find the time for more new things I'd definitely be interested <3
I'm sure there are plenty of useful tutorials out there for it!

3D art also interests me a bit. Its so far beyond what I do now, I'm sure it would be a hot minute before I can figure out those skills haha
