"Ok, maybe not literally always, you know what I mean. If I'm In the middle of a hunt and it'll kill me to answer the phone, I'm sorry, but self preservation wins out." She added with a light laugh.

"Beyond that, you know I'll listen to whatever you need."

"Yeah, I'll keep you posted." Sydney agreed with a nod, even though he couldn't see that.

"And.. just try. That's all I Can ask." She continued.

"And all I expect from you. I just want to see you move past what you're still holding on it. I forgive you for taking off so long ago, if that matters." She added. She reminded him semi regularly, at least a few times a year, but she never thought it was enough. She wanted to show that she forgave him, but had no ideas how to show such a thing.

"Oh. No." Sydney commented with a heavy sigh.

".... I haven't seen Nico since you were about a year old." She told him.

"And not for lack of trying. He just... Vanished."

"Pretty much all we can do." Sydney agreed.

"Protect Desiree though. She's a sweet girl, had plenty of hell that she's lived through already." She added.

"And yes, I know. She's like you a hunter mage. The council and triad have kept tabs."

Sydney just laughed.

"Go ahead." She stated.

"Just clean up the mess and no trouble will come. We've been hunting him for awhile, but he's way too good at covering up his tracks."

Sydney sighed, heavily.

"He hasn't woken yet." She told him honestly.

"I've been at the hospital, hoping to hear something, but... Nothing so far. He's stable, but.. Hasn't woken yet."

"You're kidding, right?" She asked.

"No. Why would anything akin to you or I benefit from smelling mana? We can smell blood, hear a hearbeat, because it's required for our survival." She told him

"And yeah, it is common to hapen, but there aren't many hunter mages out there. They... usually actually end up dead."

I've always thought it was cute how you always thought that it was a normal thing for vampires, or dhampirs, to be able to smell mana.

Desiree chuckled with a nod.

"I'll try." She promised.

They sat, ate and chat, for a bit, before they parted ways. Jaden, being the gentleman he was, did drive Desiree home, though.

The next day, Jaden woke late in the day to a text from his mother, someone he had been too caught up with company to realise that he hadn't gotten a response yet.

"Well, that works." She told him.

"What do they have that you absolutely adore? Anything?" She then asked as they climbed out of the car and started walkring.

"I wish you had." She stated, her voice almost cold, serious. There was a bit of exasperation there too,
