I feel more confident with animals that tell you if something is wrong.
Like if a cat is upset or needs something, they will let you know! They will let you know so hard!
But so many other animals just don't know how to tell you if they are sick or need something.
My only experience with animals is dogs and rats.

True, dogs and cats are much more expressive than other pets, but others can let you know by their body condition, their appetite, etc.
In any case, once I do get a reptile, it's not going to sit in its cage all the time. I want it to be sociable, so will try to handle it as much as possible without overwhelming it lol.

my brother has a whole room for his ferrets, and I like the idea of pets being able to be out and socialize and not being trapped in small cages just because they're smaller.

I love that idea too. <3 One of my best friends has like 4 or 5 rabbits, and they have an entire room to themselves since she also has like 3 or 4 dogs lol.
I have a hedgehog, but I worry about her getting into things she shouldn't since she likes to "burrow" under things. I'd hate to give her a little heart attack or something while I try to rescue her from somewhere she shouldn't be.

You have to worry with little guys like hedgehogs. You don't want to accidentally step on them, or have something fall on them. It's not like having a large animal you can see easily. My brother's ferret room has one of those doors where the top and bottom halves can open separately, so the never open the bottom just in case. And the room only has fetter appropriate things, so they can't get into/under/on anything. But not everyone has an extra room they can devote to a pet.

I didn't really get to have pets growing up, so gonna make up for that with my son, and any future kids I may have. ^^

It'll probably be mostly lizards tbh since I'm not much for snakes lol. Although sand boas do look pretty cute.
