“Humm…” Vregory smiled in a daze as he patiently listened to Vichard’s story, nodding in understanding, “Ya I remember that Solstice. Was good.”

“It was NOT!” Vichard huffed through the speakers, “Were you paying attention to anything I just said?!”

Tilting his head as if he didn’t understand, Vregory looked up at the hovering drone, “We had fun and you got good gifts though?”

The floorboards creaked under Vregory’s feet as he slowly walked across them, careful not to disturb any of the many sleeping residents in the house. If he was caught, this plan would fall through, and he couldn’t allow that to happen.

He made his way to the parlour, his eyes gazing up at the grand pine tree that filled a good portion of the room. It was festively decorated with bells and ribbons, which the servants had spent the previous day getting just right. Beneath it spilled mountains of presents, perfectly wrapped and waiting to be torn into. A lazy smile spread across Vregory’s face as he approached them, checking the tags on each before beginning to swap some.

Once he was pleased with his work, he nodded to himself and returned to his room. Well past his bedtime, he slowly closed his eyes and drifted into a peaceful slumber.

“WAKE UP!”

That was, until he found Vichard jumping onto his bed, shaking him awake excitedly, “Ah, is morning…”

“YEAH! They said we could open presents today!” Vichard all but shouted, grabbing Vregory by the hand as he forcefully pulled him out of bed and lead him down the halls. As the two ran into the parlour, the younger’s eyes widened, “Vreg, look!”

“Yeah is a lot…” Vregory smiled, nodding along. The presents were the last thing he was concerned about, as he watched his brother tear off towards them beginning to dig through the pile to find the ones with his name on them. As he began to sort through them, his pile seemed to grow bigger and bigger, dwarfing the amount that Vregory had.

“Look how many I got!” Vichard beamed, nearly gloating as he shook a package, “My plan worked! Do you see, Vreg?”

Sitting down next to him, Vregory nodded in agreement, “You must have been very good and got treats for it. Is good.”

“Hah!” Vichard puffed up proudly as he began to rip the fancy paper off one of the boxes, “It’s because I’m very smart!” The boy paused, seeing the smaller pile next to Vregory and frowned, “Next time I’ll make sure you get more too, okay? That way we can both have a lot!”

“Hummm…” Vregory shook his head, offering a smile, “Is okay… I like watching you open them more. What did you get?” He asked, perfectly content as the two spent the day going through the gifts and playing together.

“See? It worked. You were very smart,” Vregory nodded.

“Tch, no thanks to you!” Vichard huffed, “I remember that yes, and in the end despite your efforts to thwart me I managed to convince Panthala...ssa… to… bring me….” Vichard’s voice trailed off into a mumble before falling silent, and after a moment of reflection muttered, “You gave me your gifts didn’t you?”

Bringing his finger to his chin as if thinking, Vreg smiled lazily, “You deserved good treats.”

“G..GEH,” Vichard huffed, unsure how to cope with this new information, “YOU… YOU IDIOT! I’m… I'm... TCH! Have your gross cookie!” With that, Mich dropped the treat into Vregory’s hands before taking off, zooming out of sight.

Seeming unconcerned by what just took place, Vregory didn’t hesitate as he began to eat the cookie, wandering back home as he munched. After a few stops to rummage some trash cans, he eventually arrived to his dwelling, blinking as he found a box on his steps, “A surprise…”

Approaching it he lifted it, squinting at the note, “Eugene… What’s this say?” He asked, looking up to his rat companion to help. Squeaking in response, the two of them managed to read the message together:

“I don’t need your pity, don’t think you won this time!
I’ll show you who’s better at Solstice!
Here!

Vichard King, true heir and better brother”

Vregory beamed when he saw his brother’s name, and opening the gift he found it filled with expensive sweets. Immediately, Vreg began to share them with his rat friends as he mused happily, “Vichard’s a good brother, I’m glad we spent it together again…”

QUESTION: unrelated to the investigation, can I pet your rats please?

@Queen of Trash: Vregory looked up at you in mild confusion. "Mine?" He glanced down at Eugene, who squeaked in disagreement at being labelled simply as Vregory's pet. "The rats are my friends, is okay to ask them if they want pets." He handed Eugene a candy from his pocket. "Friends, see? We share lots. Is good to have friends."

QUESTION: are you aware that the delicious candy you found on the ground was provided by your very thoughtful brother? how kind of him.

@Hachi: Vregory blinked from his position, crouching by a trash can, before his smile widened. "It is?" Looking towards Vichard, his face lit up more. "He's good brother. Gets me lots of good things." Digging into his hoodie pocket, he drew out some of the leftover candy he had, and held it out to you. "Is very tasty. Want to try?"

CLUES UNLOCKED...

Vregory smiled at Vontell, his eyes lighting up with childish wonder for the world once again. "Thanks. Is good now."

Vontell smiled back, glad to have been able to help Vregory. Remembering why he was here, however, he asked, "Do you know what happened backstage before the Reaping Ritual began?"

Blinking, Vregory popped another candy in his mouth, "Backstage?" Looking down at Eugene momentarily, who shook his little head, he looked back up at Vontell. "Didn't go there. Eugene and I found lots of goodies on the ground so we had to collect." Picking up a piece of candy from the pile, he offered it to Vontell. "Want some? Is good."

Shaking his head slightly with a smile, Vontell responded, "No thank you, I'm quite alright. You enjoy them, you found them, after all." Shrugging, Vregory gave the candy to Eugene instead, who accepted it graciously. "Did you go to the Reaping Ritual at all?" Vontell asked.

Vregory nodded. "Went to watch in audience. Virgil did good with statue. It looked really nice." Pausing for a moment to look at Eugene, he then continued, "Eugene and I think statue smelled good. Understand why Virgil was too busy to see us when we saw it." Shrugging, he grabbed a handful of candy from the pile and carefully deposited it in one of Vontell's coat pockets, smiling. "For you."

"Ah, thank you," Vontell didn't want to upset him by attempting to return his generous gesture. As he departed, leaving Vregory in a good mood alongside his rats, Vontell wondered who exactly to investigate next.

• Found at the scene: Paint Supplies, a Bucket with a Bandage, and a Hairdryer with a Tangled Chord
• The letters "V F" were carved into the base of the statue
• Vanora was backstage (two witnesses confirm)
• Vivienne was backstage, and was with Treat
• Volkan was never out of anyone's sight
• The hairdryer belonged to Vivienne, and was not working correctly. Its chord was not tangled when she left it
• Vyctor delivered the statue and was backstage alone
• Virgil was the artist that created the statue
• Virgil claims the statue was a lifelike replica of Treat when he created it, he doesn't know what happened
• Virgil specifically told Vyctor not to remove the sheet, so Vyctor never saw it. Virgil claims this was to keep it protected.
• The statue was fragile
• Vanora left a mess backstage with paint, Vyctor cleaned it
• The Voltra Police Department was working security and kicked Vyctor out
• Vanora claims to have been with Velvet, who had an emergency
• Valentina should have been at the event, but was not and has not been answering her phone
• Violet helped Virgil with the statue, and had photographs to prove their innocence
• Violet used magic on the statue to help keep it from breaking
• Vichard went to Joyful Jamboree to buy candy said he had a big plan for it
• Vregory has a big sweet tooth, and was kept away from the statue while it was in the shop

In hopes of discovering what caused this tiff between Trick and Treat, I've taken it upon myself to investigate this mystery. I began by searching the backstage, where the statue had been stored prior to the exchange. My search yielded:

- Paint supplies
- A bucket with a bandage
- A hairdryer with a tangled chord
- The letters "V F" carved into the statue's base

Perhaps these are important clues... Or perhaps it is just rubbish left behind. We'll have to search further.

Questioning the mayor, who was closest to the scene, I discovered the following information:

- Mayor Volkan was busy all day and was never alone at any point
- The statue was being watched all the time it was backstage
- Vanora, Vivienne, and security were backstage, at least that Volkan knew of

Perhaps Vanora or Vivienne may be able to shed more light upon this situation...

My poor friend Vivienne appeared to be under a lot of distress when I visited her. It seems she was having some technical difficulties with her equipment. After I calmed her, we discussed her experience backstage:

- Her hairdryer stopped functioning properly when she was styling Treat's hair
- She was with Treat the entire time, the entered and left the backstage together
- She confirmed Vanora was there
- She mentioned that Vyctor was also there, and potentially delivered the statue

Vyctor was an ordeal to speak to, due to the large influx of customers he had been faced with. However, once they had cleared out our conversation yielded a surprising amount of leads and information:

- Virgil was the artist behind the statue, and has asked Vyctor to transport it for him
- Virgil was very clear that Vyctor was not to remove the sheet at any time, so Vyctor never saw it before the reveal on stage
- Vyctor had time alone backstage, as there was nobody around when he delivered the statue
- There was a mess of paint left by an unknown person, which Vyctor took the time to clean up
- Vyctor was eventually escorted out by the Voltra Police Department, who were acting as security for the event

After having to go on a bit of a chase to capture Timberland, I managed to have a little talk with Vanora. She was able to verify some information, as well as offer a few interesting leads:

- She left the mess backstage when she was painting props and displays
- She was called away in the middle of it by Velvet, who claimed to have an emergency
- Claims she never saw Vyctor or the statue, but she did recall passing Vivienne
- Valentina should have been at the event, but Vanora never saw her and cannot contact her

Virgil was in a worse mood than usual when I paid him a visit, seemingly because of the sorry state Joyful Jamboree was in. After helping him clean up, he was open to a conversation:

- He admits to creating the statue, stating that it was a commission from Trick
- He denies tampering with it, even going so far as to state he wishes he did because of the reaction it caused
- Virgil stated that the statue was fragile and needed careful handling
- He state that Violet was with him during the creation, and that she may have useful evidence

To follow up Virgil's claims, I ventured to speak with his sister Violet. Unfortunately when I arrived, she seemed to be tied up with her work. After helping her organize, she revealed to me:

- She did help Vigil craft the statue, and had photo evidence to prove they were innocent
- The statue was made of candy
- She had cast a spell on the statue to strengthen it and keep it from breaking
- Vichard had been to the store, and mentioned having a "big plan" in store. it required a lot of candy
- Vregory was seen as an obstacle, as he can't help himself around candy

Finding Vregory King, greatly upset by the chaos that is currently ruling Voltra, I helped him calm down somewhat, after which he told me:

- He found goodies on the ground and made to collect them
- He didn't go backstage at all
- He arrived to watch the Ritual in the audience and didn't seem to realise that anything was off with the statue
- He thought the statue smells good, which ties into it being made of candy like Violet said

Vontell found Vregory King crouching down on the ground, nibbling nervously on candy from a pile in front of him, his little rat friends doing the same.

"Is...is so bad." Vregory muttered to his little friend Eugene, rocking on the ground slightly, as several people ran past on the street, yelling and arguing, Trick and Treat's feud continuously spreading through the citizens of Voltra. Eugene nodded as he chomped down on the candy in his little ratty hands.

Seemingly unnoticed, Vontell greeted Vregory softly, alerting him to his presence.

Looking up at him silently, Vregory grabbed another piece of candy from the pile and shoved it into his mouth. Vontell frowned a little as he saw that Vregory's eyes were full of fear, rather than the contentment that usually resided in them.

"Are you feeling alright?" Vontell asked, feeling slightly off asking a question that he could clearly see the answer to.

Vregory shook his head, pointing at the street. "Scary..." With that, he pulled back in on himself again, only reaching out to nibble on more candy.

Vontell's frown deepened. Clearly, the current state of affairs in Voltra was upsetting Vregory. Vontell crouched down beside him, ready to reassure the sweet man who'd never mean anyone harm.

Day 4 Lore

Having engorged herself already of a steaming variety of festival food, Constance was struggling to finish the fish shaped taiyaki that stared up at her from the plate. She glared at the trash bin in contempt of how wasteful others are with food, while waiting for her stomach to digest; knowing she’d never lower herself to that level.

A passerby discarded their partially eaten burger, which infuriated Constance. She stormed right up to confront the wasteful offender but as she raised a lecturing finger ready to call them out in a storm of carefully chosen words, a hand suddenly lurched out from behind the bin!-- startling her backwards in a shriek. She sat mouth agape for a moment, as she observed the hand rummaging through the bag, and like a predator snatching its prey-- it arose with its victory kill: The partially eaten burger.

Constance rubbed her eyes confused before stumbling to grab the taiyaki she had dropped. Approaching cautiously, she let her hand hang over the trash bin for a few moments. Then, bluntly released the confectionery into the crinkling bag with a 'thud'. The sound which apparently summoned the hand once again to peruse the contents of the trash and retrieve the taiyaki; before snapping its hand back behind the bin. “...Is a tasty find…” she could hear a man's voice, followed by the sounds of several mouths crunching.

“Curiosity killed the cat... but not the Constance!” she gulped and thought to herself as she jutted sideways of the bin to catch the trash picker before they could try to flee in shame. Instead of running however, several beady eyes raised their gazes to her-- and with them a young man with crumbs strung along his lips, simply accepted her presence.

“Who are you?” She asked, feeling more fascinated rather than concerned. He slowly blinked a few times as he thought about the peculiar question. “Me?... I’m me.” then nodded to assure himself. The larger rat of the pack leapt from his head to his shoulder, standing in order to reach his ear. “Ah, Eugene says you want my name...mmm." His head began to slowly tilt--seemingly distracted in thought. The perched rat gently patted the young man's face to snap him back to the present. "Oh, sorry!...is Vreg." He smiled warmly before pushing forth an array of discarded festival food. “Want some?...is very good.”

Constance fervorously shook her head, but continued to watch endearingly as the pack of rats turned piles of waste into nothing. “One dude’s trash is another’s treasure…” She crouched beside Vreg and smirked. “That's what I used to tell my peers at the orphanage!” Constance said with a mischievous snicker. Vreg listened attentively while taking a few more bites, being sure to properly dispense pieces among his rodent friends. “...Where is the orange?” He asked, sounding a bit confused. Constance laughed to the point of spitting-- but without judgment continued to converse at a pace more comfortable for Vreg.
