They didn't say anything, but nodded before addressing everything else.

"That... well, I suppose that makes sense. It's just as well you're returning." They told him honestly.

"Oh? Why?" Callie asked, her voice curious.

"Simply because of the fact that the shrine to the west has become corrupted, and about half of the city has lost their lives - or sanity - to the corruption that is spreading throughout the city."

Can it be.. undone?

Adym's expression sank.

"...the shrine..." he whispered.

"Oh, no..." he said further.

"What?" Callie asked.

"That shrine is... it's what keeps the forest alive and thriving." Adym responded.

"And it's also what keeps my home prosperous and lively." he went on.

"If it's corrupted, it means the death of the forest... and all that dwell within it."

Callie was silent for a moment before meeting Adym's gaze. When she did so, there was a definite determination to her gaze, something that he hadn't really seen previously.

"So while we're here, we might as well do what we can to help." She said simply, her voice almost offhanded, but certainly with an air of authority to it - even if she didn't realise.

"Unless you're honestly not wanting to. If it's that crucial to the survival of those around here, then it seems that I'm going to help, at the very least." She continued.

"Why?" THeir guide asked.

"I can't sit and watch anyone be in trouble while I'm around. I wasn't raised to do that. If I can help, I was raised to help." Callie answered. It was something that wasn't too surprising, considering who her parents were.

Adym just looked at her, stunned for a moment, before smiling.

"Heh." he chuckled.

"Yeah." he said.

"I like that attitude." he told her.

"And the more help we have, the better." he continued.

"Thank you." he then said.

"This... means a lot to me."

Callie just shrugged lightly.

"I do what I can." She said.

"I may not know my way around here, but at least I want to help." She then said.

"I want to do what I can, especialyl since you, Adym, have been so kind to me since I woke up unexpectedly in your home."

Adym was silent for a split-second, and nodded.

"Of course." he replied.

He then looked to their new guide.

"We're going to see if we can't help." he told them.

"...after all, I have a duty to." he went on.

"This is my home, and... well... you know what I am." he continued.

"I am practically duty-bound to do something about this." he reasoned.

"....and we know that this is just the start. I need to try and cut this off right here and now."

The guide nodded.

"I expect that you've stumbled upon why you were told to return home." They told him simply.

"You... may very well be the only one that can help. The guardian hasn't been seen for about a cycle." They told him, which was when Callie paused.

"Wait, what?" Callie asked.

"... a month?" She asked.

"..........." Adym was silent for a moment.

"Ah..." he stammered.

"Yes." he said.

"Yes, a cycle IS a month." he told Callie.

"I... how did you...?" he started to ask, before pausing.

'How did she know that?' he asked himself.

'Is... is she remembering?' he wondered.

'Was whatever Vyran did... incomplete...?' he asked himself further, again, within his head.

"It's rather concerning." Their guide commented.

"We haven't seen the guardian for long enough that we are questioning if it is alive any longer."They then said.

"Wouldn't that mean there would be another to replace it?" Callie asked, her voice curious.

"Only if the guardian was dead. With there not being a new guardian, it means that the previous one is still alive, still capable of protecting the grounds." Was the answer

"...so they guardian isn't dead." Adym muttered.

"But it's not performing its duties." he went on.

He then paused and thought about it... before freezing.

"....oh no..." he whispered.

"That... that means... there's a strong chance that the guardian is corrupted as well." he realised.

"And if that's true, we need to act even sooner than I had originally thought."

Their guide sighed lightly with a nod.

"That has been considered by all of us, as well." Was all they said.

"There have been teams sent out to try and find the guardian... none have returned successful, and that's if they even return in the first place." They added with weght to their words.

Again, Adym was silent.

And Callie could see the almost-despair in his eyes.

"....no..." he whispered.

"This... that... no..." he repeated.

He then sighed deeply.

"Such... senseless loss..." he said quietly.

"I... I can't let any more happen." he added, a quiet conviction to his tone.

"Do you want to stop by the city first?" Their guide asked after a moment or two.

"If you don't, we can deviate and go around to the shrine, instead."

"Oh? Is the shrine not in the city?" Callie asked, her voice curious.

"Not at all. It's outside of the ccity so the guardian doesn't risk possibly harming anyone inadvertantly." Was the answer.

"Ohhh, so it's for space. That's fair." Callie commented

Adym thought for a moment.

"I..." he stammered.

"I want so desperately to go to the city... my home..." he admitted.

"But I don't know if I could bear to see it in pain..." he admitted further.

"I just... I want to help it." he said.

"Maybe that's best done by going right to the shrine." he went on.

"...unless we need to stock up." he suddenly added at the end, thinking about it.

Their guide nodded.

"Of course." They said.

"I have no idea if we're good on supplies or not." Callie then admitted.

"I think we should be all right, since we have the goods that you bring forth." She added.

"Okay." Adym responded.

He then looked at their new guide.

"Guess we're going right to the shrine." he told them.

"The sooner we go to solve this issue, the better." he reasoned.

"..." he was then silent, before looking at them again.

"I promise." he said.

"We WILL solve this." he vowed.

"We WILL bring life back to this forest, and the city."

"Considering who you are, I would be surprised if you can't." Their guide commented honestly.

"But... all we can do is wait and see." They added.

--

About an hour later, their guide had left them alone and Adym and Callie were standing outside the perimeter of the shrine. Their guide wasn't going to go across that perimeter.

"How are you feeling, Adym?" Callie asked, wondering if how he was feeling about it all. She'd realised sine they'd entered the trees that he was feeling it more than she was.

"....nervous." Adym replied.

"Concerned." he went on.

He then paused for a moment, and sighed heavily.

"All right, that's a massive understatement." he admitted.

"I'm terrified." he told her.

"This... this is my home. This shrine is a place that I've been connected to since birth." he continued.

"To see it... feel it... be sullied by this corruption is... infuriating, and saddening." he went on.

"But... can I really do anything?" he asked. "Or was what I said back there just... baseless bravado?"

"Well, you won't know until you try." Callie stated simply, calmly, as she stepped up and just laid a hand on his back in a friendly, kind, manner.

"You can't do anything else. You won't know if you can or cannot do anything until you try. And even if you do try and fail, at least you can rest assured that you gave it an honest attempt." She then said before puasing.

"Beyond that, this is home for you, and since you've been connected since birth, I'd put money down that yeah. You're the one that can help."

"You're right." he said.

"You're absolutely right." he agreed.

He then took a deep breath, held it for a moment, and exhaled.

"Let's go." he told her.

"It's now, or later. And we don't have the luxury of waiting until later." he finished, before marching forward.

As he did, something sensed that he was there... that the both of them were there... and that something started to stir ever-so-slightly.

"Careful." he then said to her.

"We don't know what to expect. Be ever vigilant."
