@MoodyB: i cant give you a proper training for realism study cos i myself is having problem with color theory.

what i can tell you that i have learned from grinding is that the skin is not just shaded in red hue alone. its basically in all rainbow spectrum. blues/blue violets affects the skin to cold shift shading while reds/red purples affects the skin to warm shading. yes, green also exist in skin shading.

thats pretty much the basic understanding from my grind in realism skin

as for the skin/hair/eye etc.. mind their texture. it makes a huge difference to create an illusion as if its real. even if its just grayscale.

lastly, realism portrait practise helps you understand face placements. it can apply to all forms of art style (cartoony - anime - wester comic) even anthro also (if anthro is more 80% human 20% animal)
