I had researched this trip thoroughly and knew what we were going to need and what to expect.

It sounds like your research paid off - big time! It sounds like you had to bring your own tools? Is that normal? Or did you just bring extra tools??

Well the articles I read said to bring your own tools, and the person I spoke to on the phone said the same thing. But they did provide some pickaxes and a few other things.

Huh. That might be your awareness of those things - they can be hard to know of until you literally drive past them! Or it could be the difference of being in a college town versus being in a more touristy type location with all the cute little towns everywhere...
