"I still feel all right. No numbness." he told her.

"How about you?" he asked Callie.

"Any numbness?" he asked her.

As he spoke, they could see flashes of light penetrate the canopy... and the crashes of thunder sounded right overhead.

"Yeah, same." Callie answered after taking stock of everything.

"Good." The elf commented.

"You should be good until we reach our destination." She added before sighing lightly.

"This rain has been going for far too long."

"And it shows no signs of letting up." Adym said.

"...also, neither Callie nor I have heard ANYTHING akin to a normal or average forest sound here." he then muttered. "No chittering, no rustling, just... eerie silence." he sighed.

That's when they heard another crash, saw another flash, and then heard a loud cracking sound.

"Woah!" Adym exclaimed.

"That sounded like a tree." he said.

And sure enough, it seemed the lightning had decimated a nearby tree, which had split open, and half was falling right towards them.

Callie jumped with the noise, as did the elf. When it became apparent what had happened, there was a bit of a growl from the elf as she grabbed Adym, getting him out of the range of the tree. She hadn't had time to grab Callie too, and had been trained to focus on Adym anyway.

The tree fell, and Callie let out a cry of shock and surprise.

The elves were out of the way, the tree crashed down.

It all happened in the span of a couple of seconds.

Adym didn't even have time to react properly, as it all happened in the span of a few seconds.

By the time he'd realised what had happened, it was too late.

And he looked towards the downed tree... where Callie had been standing... horrified.

"CALLIE!" he yelled.

"NO!" he screamed, racing over.

"Callie, say something!" he pleaded in a panicked tone.

Adym was met with silence for about ten seconds before he noticed the ground was getting slippery. When he looked down, he saw ice creeping around in unexpected patterns. It didn't take long before it was a simple message - heavy.

She was asking for him to lift the tree, or shift it, or something. That wasn't hard to guess. The reason was a bit puzzling though.

And then he heard some cracking, crinkling.

It sounded like a sheet of glass.

Or ice.

"Callie!" he exclaimed.

He then looked around, before placing his hands on the muddy ground. As soon as he did, thick vines emerged from the soil, and started to push up on the tree that had fallen down.

It was hard for him to do, as the corruption was actively fighting his efforts, but he was managing.

And he managed to get the tree lifted up an inch or so, and shift it slightly towards him.

He wondered how hurt Callie was.

'Please be okay, please be okay...' he pleaded internally.

He managed to hold it up, and he female that was there made her way around to where it was a bit more open to try and help.

Sure enough, a couple minutes later, Callie was no longer underneath it, and Adym let the tree fall.

"That was fun." The brunettte commented simply with a light sigh.

"How did you survive?" The elf asked.

"Soft soil and ice." Was Callie's answer.

"...." they were both silent for a moment.

"Wait..." Adym muttered.

"Soft soil... and ice?" he asked.

"The soft soil part I can understand. I mean, it offers less resistance and you can sink in it and such." he told her.

"But... how did the ice help?" he asked her.

"I... my brain's just not piecing this together, admittedly."

"Icy shield." Callie answered.

"Was able to have some thick ice above me take the brunt of the imapct. Granted, I still hurt like a bitch from that, but at least I don't think anything broke from that." She added.

"and you're still alive." the elf commented, which net a chuckle from Callie.

"That too."

Adym just sighed heavily, in relief.

"Ohhhh thank goodness." he said.

"That... was some really quick thinking." he told her.

"You're quick to react." he commented further, before hanging his head slightly.

"That very well could have killed you." he went on, looking back at the female elf that had joined them.

"..." he was silent, thinking about something, and then looked back at Callie.

"Are you seriously hurt anywhere?" he asked.

"Seriously hurt? No." Callie answered, stretching.

"I hurt, but I'm pretty sure it'll be nothing more than sprains or bruises." She added.

"Are you sure?" The elf asked. Callie just nodded.

"I'm sure. I can move fine." She assured both elves.

"All right." Adym responded.

"Then let's get moving, quick." he told them.

"We don't want anything else to happen." he muttered further.

With that, the three of them continued their journey, with a bit more of a quickened pace, when the darkness surrounding them suddenly became... extremely thick. Almost palpable.

"...what in the...?" Adym growled.

"I can't even see my hand in front of my face now." he said.

"Are you two nearby?" he asked his female traveling companions.

"Can you hear me?"

He was met with silence, pure, suffocating, silence.

He couldn't even hear his own breathing around him. . No one was answering. For all intents and purposes, he was alone. Completely alone, and potentially lost in the forest.

The other two weren't faring any better.

All three had been separated for the oment, and it didn't take long before Adym heard something. It sounded far away, suppressed, silenced, but it was still there.

"Adym!" He couldn't identify the voice, but it was someone there. He was sure of that.

they were the only two that knew he was there, after all. Right?

"Who's there!?" he yelled, as he started to walk towards the voice, arms outstretched forward.

"Hello!? Callie!?" he asked.

"Where are you!?" he called out further.

'Damn it, what's going on!?' he thought.

'All I can do is follow my ears now.'

There was silence around him, but he wasn't too surprised. After all, it seemed this darkness was swallowing him whole.

He followed the calls of his name, hoping beyond hope that it would take him to someone that was friendly.

Sure enough, he ended up crashing into Callie.

As they both ended up on the ground, the only way he was able to tell who it was, was the brief bit of the ice blue in her hair he saw as she fell.

"Oh good, I've found you." he told her.

"I was getting worried." he said further.

"...is Chalra with you?" he then asked, before pausing.

"Oh. You were never properly introduced." he realised.

"The one that helped us escape the Creos in the cabin." he clarified, though he figured she could've guessed who he was referring to.

"This darkness isn't natural." he said further.

"And yes, I'm surprised we found each other, too." he agreed.

"It seems like the corruption is actively trying to make us lost and separated."

"... is it at all possible that it led us to each other?" Callie asked after a moment or two, her voice curious.

"Because... I don't know... this doesn't feel so threatening? Maybe something's affecting my perception, but it almost feels like a protection from the rain, and everything else in the forest." She added, looking around.

".... even if this unending blackness is seriously unnerving." she muttered
