So I'm kicking around opening (RL) commissions cause I'm broke and I have no idea what size to make the canvas. Especially if someone wants to print later. What sizes do y'all reccomend?

(I've been doing most of my art lately on 2000x2000 300dpi b/c it's easy to share to Instagram without a fuss lol)

it really depends how big they'd want a print, though it's more important what you save it as then what size it is.

300dpi is good for printing, you can make it 350 just to be safe.
I usually work in A4 format when making prints or A3

I usually have mine from 2500x3500 depending on what i want for the piece.
I usually don't go under 2500 mark though.
However I keep mine at 600dpi.
But most say to have it between 350 dpi or higher.

Hope this helps and good luck with your commissions!
It can be very difficult to get commissions.

I personally work with 2560x2560 at 300dpi, however, for print I'd make sure the canvas spans maybe.. 10 inches at the minimum based on 350 dpi - so 3500x3500 pixels at 350dpi based on my art program.

Oh! This is very important: Make sure to designate a bleed - most printing places will tell you what their preferred bleed measurement is. This is so you don't get misprints when making art. Maybe do some research for possible printing places and then go with the largest bleed amount to be safe?

hmm i usually use tabloid (11 x 17) at 300 dpi ... but honestly i don't sell prints or anything so it's kind of arbitrary for me

Thank you for the great suggestions! I don't want to print personally. I just didn't want it to be hassle if somebody did want to print lol

There's something foul about the air here...

I use 350dpi and start on something a bit larger than a legal note (8.5"x11") then adjust as needed from there, but I don't do art for printing

I would recommend asking clients ahead of time about if they would want to print it out and what size they're gonna print it so you know for certain what to do

I’ve been doing 11x17 in size as I recently try to get back into drawing.

@Lilykin: at the absolute least, you want 300dpi for prints.
600dpi if you want to go better than the lowest.

Beyond that, I start with a 5kx5k canvas, and alter as I need to. Wiether I need to expand a dimension (vertical or horizontal) or shrink, I start with 5k and go from there.
... mostly because that's the default that CSP opens a new canvas with, lol

Also, keep in mind that prints is not an easy market to get into.
