Boxes and bags lay strewn across the floor, filled with various ornaments and decorations. Vanora sat on the rug by her freshly placed Solstice tree and took a deep breath, the scent of evergreen and cinnamon filling her with happiness and warmth. She could hear Vivi humming from the kitchen. The smell of cinnamon was likely one of the numerous batches of cookies Vivi decided just needed to be made right now. Vanora rolled her eyes and smiled, her heart filling with even more love.

"Daaaaad, it's time to put the ornaments on the tree! Hurry up!!" Little Vanora jumped up and down in excitement as she waited for her dad to help her. She couldn't put most of the ornaments on the tree, so he had to either put them up himself or lift her up to put them up.

"I'm coming, I'm coming!" Volkan chuckled, his deep voice booming throughout the house. Vanora grabbed an ornament and ran up to him, holding it up earnestly. "I want this one up first!" she exclaimed. Volkan took the ornament from her hands and nodded. "Then this one shall go up first!"

Vanora giggled and ran back, looking up at the bare tree that would soon be filled with amazing ornaments they'd created and collected over the years. The first ornament that would be going up is one she had made a year prior, and she was extremely proud of it! It was a round, clear ornament with a soft powdery snow-like substance at the bottom, and a tiny realistic Solstice tree glued to the bottom. You could shake it and make it look like snow was covering the tree, and Vanora loved how it glistened in the light of the fireplace.

This was perhaps her favorite part of Solstice, apart from the presents of course. She just loved decorating and making the tree look different every year. Some years they used colorful lights, other years they used white lights. One year they even used purple lights! This year they decided to use plain, white lights.

Vanora was staring up at the tree lost in thought when she jumped, startled by the sound of her papa's voice. "Vanora, come here a moment! I have a gift for you." Vanora tilted her head, confused. "But Dad, it's not Solstice night yet!" Volkan chuckled. "I know, but this one needs to be given early so we can add it to the collection."

Vanora squealed, knowing what it had to be. "Another ornament?! Dad! Thank you!" Volkan knew how much she adored new ornaments and due to the already large amount they possessed, he tried not to acquire any more. But when he saw the little teddy bear ornament in the window of a random shop he passed, he just knew Vanora would be estatic.

He took out a small box and opened it, presenting it to her so she could reveal the ornament. Vanora could hardly contain herself as she reached in and pulled the new piece of her collection. She felt something slightly fuzzy and soft, trying to guess what it was before she even pulled it out. She decided she just wanted to see it and pulled it out quickly, revealing an adorable little teddy bear, donned with a dark red bow around his neck.

The squeal that ensued probably gave Volkan permanent hearing loss but it was worth it to see his little girl so happy. It took him a moment to realize the squealing had stopped and it was just his ears ringing.

"I take it that means you like it? Volkan asked. Vanora looked up at him with big round eyes. "Like it? Um... Dad... I LOVE IT! She jumped up and threw her hands around her dad's midsection, that being all she could reach of him. He bent down and wrapped his arms around her, giving her a great, big hug. "I'm glad you like it, sweetie. I knew it was meant to be yours when I first laid eyes on it. Now, would you like to do the honors?" Volkan picked her up and lifted her towards the tree. She directed him to the place where she wanted her special new ornament to go, which would be right in the middle where she and anyone else who came to visit could see it clearly.

They both took the ornament and placed it on the tree together, Vanora nodding determinedly and proud. "Perfect!"

For the rest of the night, they continued to decorate and enjoy the spirit of Solstice in the air that was almost tangible. It didn't take long for Vanora to wind down and get sleepy. Volkan noticed she started getting sleepy as she was putting garland on the fireplace. She ended up not putting all of it and managed to somehow get it wrapped around herself. Volkan chuckled and walked over to unravel his daughter. "I think it's time you went to bed, missy."

Vanora barely mumbled in protest as he picked her up, sans garland, and took her to her room to tuck her in. As he was leaving her room, he could hear her mumble a sleepy 'thank you' and then her soft little snores filled the room. He smiled, turning out the lights and cracking her door shut.

- - -

Vanora startled, coming back to the present. She could still hear Vivi in the kitchen making all kinds of clanking and clinking. She smiled, loving the sound of Solstice preparations. It was undoubtedly her favorite time of the year.

She looked towards the tree that they had pretty much finished decorating at this point. It held all her favorite ornaments that she'd received or crafted over the years, and still her favorite to this day was the small, and slightly worn, teddy bear that her dad had gotten for her one year.

QUESTION: Did your father blast the statue with lasers when he was angry, and you’re trying to cover up for him? (abridged)

@Tsundererra: Vanora's face twists into one of confusion as your questioning pursues. "Ah, that was just our fault for being careless, it's just a coincidence that everything got left around, I guess. Pretty careless of us, huh?" Biting her lip, she continued. "Though, I only remember bringing the paint supplies and Vivi with her hairdryer. I'm not sure where the bandages came from."

Her face fell as you accused her father of corruption and bribing others. "No, my dad absolutely wouldn't do a thing like that. He's always thinking of what's best for anyone. The VPD are always following the law, too. They'd never cover up the truth just to save themselves. They're not those kind of people, otherwise they'd never have gotten the jobs they have now."

"I'm...SORRY? My father's WHAT now? He doesn't have any...lasers. I'm pretty sure." Vanora took a couple of hesitant steps backwards. "I..?" Turning to Vivienne, she asked, "What are they even asking me right now..?"

CLUES UNLOCKED...

With Timber tired and candy-less, Vanora breathed a sigh of relief, herself having been worn-out by the now weary feline. At the very least, Timber was safe, as was the candy.

“Oh, yeah I’ve been here since practically forever, making sure everything was good and ready! Had to do some last-minute painting too, we were going to have some nice displays for the event. Velvet called me before I could really get things done, thought. She said she needed some help with her costume and that it was an emergency. You know how dramatic she can be about these things..." Vanora laughed, "I was just on my way back to finish things up when… that happened.”

Vanora looked at Timber’s sleeping form, the cat having truly tired herself out in her epic chase for candy. Smiling a bit, she continued “Hm…I didn’t even get to see the statue before I had to help Velvet out. Anyway, you saw the stuff I’ve got in there, right? Sorry for the mess, things can get pretty hectic when you’re cutting things close…”

At this, Vontell gave her a confused look, before recalling his conversation with Vyctor, laughing faintly, "I hadn't, in fact. It seemed Vyctor got to it first. When I arrived, everything was rather organized"

At this, Vanora herself had looked perplexed. “Really? Weird... I wonder why he'd do that. When I'm trying to get work done fast, I'm always a right mess! It wouldn't have been easy for him, I had paint everywhere."

Vontell made sure to file away this information for later. With everything happening right now, random acts of kindness did seem quite suspect. However, at this time he had no reason as of yet to doubt Vyctor's intentions, adding, "I suppose it's possible sanitation becomes habit with his line of work... Was there anything else of note during your time there?"

"Yeah that's true, he's a helpful guy too... Hmm.. OH! Yeah, Valentina was supposed to meet me at the event but she never showed up. I tried calling and texting but she never answered, either... If you have a chance, can you check in on her to make sure she's alright? But I'm sure she's fine, you know how flaky she can be!"

Vontell frowned slightly from this information, “Interesting... Well, thank you for your time, Vanora. This should help immensely in my search for more clues…”

“No problem! Hopefully things calm down soon though. Can’t imagine any good coming outta this kerfuffle...”

• Found at the scene: Paint Supplies, a Bucket with a Bandage, and a Hairdryer with a Tangled Chord
• The letters "V F" were carved into the base of the statue
• Vanora was backstage (two witnesses confirm)
• Vivienne was backstage, and was with Treat
• Volkan was never out of anyone's sight
• The hairdryer belonged to Vivienne, and was not working correctly. Its chord was not tangled when she left it
• Vyctor delivered the statue and was backstage alone
• Virgil was the artist that created the statue
• Virgil specifically told Vyctor not to remove the sheet, so Vyctor never saw it
• Vanora left a mess backstage with paint, Vyctor cleaned it
• The Voltra Police Department was working security and kicked Vyctor out
• Vanora claims to have been with Velvet, who had an emergency
• Valentina should have been at the event, but was not and has not been answering her phone

In hopes of discovering what caused this tiff between Trick and Treat, I've taken it upon myself to investigate this mystery. I began by searching the backstage, where the statue had been stored prior to the exchange. My search yielded:

- Paint supplies
- A bucket with a bandage
- A hairdryer with a tangled chord
- The letters "V F" carved into the statue's base

Perhaps these are important clues... Or perhaps it is just rubbish left behind. We'll have to search further.

Questioning the mayor, who was closest to the scene, I discovered the following information:

- Mayor Volkan was busy all day and was never alone at any point
- The statue was being watched all the time it was backstage
- Vanora, Vivienne, and security were backstage, at least that Volkan knew of

Perhaps Vanora or Vivienne may be able to shed more light upon this situation...

My poor friend Vivienne appeared to be under a lot of distress when I visited her. It seems she was having some technical difficulties with her equipment. After I calmed her, we discussed her experience backstage:

- Her hairdryer stopped functioning properly when she was styling Treat's hair
- She was with Treat the entire time, the entered and left the backstage together
- She confirmed Vanora was there
- She mentioned that Vyctor was also there, and potentially delivered the statue

Vyctor was an ordeal to speak to, due to the large influx of customers he had been faced with. However, once they had cleared out our conversation yielded a surprising amount of leads and information:

- Virgil was the artist behind the statue, and has asked Vyctor to transport it for him
- Virgil was very clear that Vyctor was not to remove the sheet at any time, so Vyctor never saw it before the reveal on stage
- Vyctor had time alone backstage, as there was nobody around when he delivered the statue
- There was a mess of paint left by an unknown person, which Vyctor took the time to clean up
- Vyctor was eventually escorted out by the Voltra Police Department, who were acting as security for the event

After having to go on a bit of a chase to capture Timberland, I managed to have a little talk with Vanora. She was able to verify some information, as well as offer a few interesting leads:

- She left the mess backstage when she was painting props and displays
- She was called away in the middle of it by Velvet, who claimed to have an emergency
- Claims she never saw Vyctor or the statue, but she did recall passing Vivienne
- Valentina should have been at the event, but Vanora never saw her and cannot contact her

Having gathered all the clues he could, Vontell made his way to his next lead, Vanora. According to both her father and her girlfriend, she had been behind the scenes before the exchange took place. Where Vontell found her now, she was happily munching on some candy she had in a small pouch. Timber followed, staring intensely at the pouch.

“Excuse me Vanora, would you mind if I asked you a few questions?” Vontell asked. The girl in question stopped, her cat’s gaze following her hand as she finished off one more piece of candy.

“Hm? Oh, hey there Von…just a sec, I’ll put this awa-” Vanora was about to return the candy pouch to her pocket when Timber, who had until that point been rather quiet, jumped up with a triumphant meow and snatched it from her hands.

“Oh no, Timber, come back! Candy isn’t for kitties!” Vanora cried out, giving chase as quickly as the feisty feline had ran, opposite where the two had just come from. Vontell stared for a bit before massaging the bridge of his nose in exasperation.

“…Oh dear.”
