"Wait, really?" She asked, her voice surprised.

". . . That's.... that's alarming." She told him simply, honestly.

"Did you get the mana increase as well?" She asked, her voice curious.

"I feel it." he said.

"I feel stronger. More powerful. I feel more mana inside me." he continued.

He then sighed, and looked away.

"I'm sorry." he apologised again.

"I almost did it. You were almost gone forever..."

"I... don't know though." She added.

"Maybe." She shook her head before looking to ASh.

"anyway, seems we need to step up the runic training. You are getting better with it, but seems we might be starting from ground zero again." She added with a light sigh.

"Which is to say, I tried to contain it in my body?" he told her.

"Or... well, were you not able to tell?"

"I can't say for certain, but froim what I can tell you, it didn't even break the edge of this clearing." She told him honestly.

"So you've definitely made progress." She added with a smile, one that had pride to it.

"Which is good. I know you don't want to unwittingly trap unsuspecting or unworthy people."

"The rune is evil. It's bad, and it does bad things." he continued.

"I don't want to be like... Mother." he whispered.

"Using the rune isn't bad. It's the intent behind it that makes it bad." She told him honestly.

"If you're using it in defense, as a means to freeze your attacker, but not seal them, then that's fine." She then added.

"It's purely intent that makes it bad or not."

"Of course you do! That's what we've been trying. But maybe now that your head is properly ---" She paused before sighing, motioning toward the edge of the clearing.

"You've got company." She then said simply. As he looked over, he saw the figure of his mother in the distance, approaching them

Ash froze when he saw her... but then relaxed a bit.

And looked miffed.

"....good." he said.

"Know what? Good." he repeated.

"I have some things to ask her." he growled, sounding unimpressed.

He then completely turned and faced her, crossing his arms over his chest.

He wasn't going to go to her, she had to come all the way to him.

Sure enough, the woman did approach.

"What in the seven blazes of hell are you doing having a rune THAT strong you imbecilic child!?" She snapped, backhanding him.

"The last thing this world needs is for another Fyrane to lose their shit." She added, making it aware that she was aware of what was going on, at least.

"Hey!" Rylie half snapped as she got between them, to Rowena's very unimpressed glare.

"You dare get in the way? Do you know what I can do to you?" Rowena asked, her voice threatening the rune that was starting to echo around them.

"You know I can stop you in an instant." was all Rylie said, her face splitting as Ash had seen it do in the past.

"STOP IT!" Ash yelled.

"Enough!" he said.

He then got between Rowena and Rylie, and stared into Rowena's eyes.

At this point, the fear that she had seen in him before... was gone. Completely gone. There was now anger in them. Anger and confidence... but mostly anger.

"You!" he said.

"What the HELL gave you right to even TOUCH me!?" he demanded. "Let alone threaten the woman that's been raising me, when she stepped in to stop you from potentially hitting me AGAIN!?" he asked.

"And where do you get off having ANY sort of attitude towards me!?" he then asked, a black aura of flames unconsciously flaring up around him now.

"Especially after you lied to me about what happened when the rune went out of control back at the inn!?"

Rowena was silent for a moment before just crossing her arms.

"How dare you claim I lied." She snarled.

"I get you think very lowly of me, but how dare you claim that I speak untruths." She added.

"Rowena, calm down." Rylie said, not looking normal again.

"Before I have to stop you." She added. Rowena just shot a look to Rylie that froze her in place - as there was a rune beneath her dress. No one could see it, but the runes crawling across her skin made things quite obvious.

"Now that we don't have that irritation." Rowena stated before looking back to AShley.

"I did not lie to you." She stated.

"Your brother died. For the first time."

Ash looked over at Rylie, saw the runes crawling across her skin, and then looked back at Rowena.

"Don't call her an 'irritation'!" he demanded, his anger growing even more apparent.

"She's the only reason I'm even still alive right now." he told her, tears streaming down his cheeks.

"And here you are, flaunting that evil rune that belongs to that evil family name." he growled.

"And what do you mean he died!? Then why did it happen AGAIN!?" he exclaimed, before pausing.

"Wait, what?" he asked.

"FIRST time!?" he asked her.

"What does that even mean!? People die, and that's it!" he exclaimed.

"There are no 'next times'!" he declared.

".....are there?" he then asked, clearly growing more confused.

"Normally, no. There are no next times." Rowena answered, completely ignoring everything regarding Rylie for the moment. She wasn't sealing the woman, instead just using it to freeze her in place - unknowingly doing exactly what it was that Rylie had told Ash mere minutes before, that he could.

"I went to hunt the bitch out." She stated before sighing. "Found some notes, and that's it." She sighed here.

". . . I assume that what was attempted was successful, if the fact that it happened again, as you said, is anything to go by." She paused before meeting Ashley's gaze.

"You rbrother isn't fully human. That elf did some fuckery and fused him with a phoenix."

"The one thing that would result in a Fyrane being killed on sight." She muttered.

"I... ah..." he stammered.

"Wait..." he said, grasping at his head.

"Okay, so they fused him with a phoenix." he said. "Well, guess HE was success, at least..." he mumbled, looking away.

"But result in a Fyrane being killed on sight?" he asked her.

"Why? The hell does THAT mean?" he asked further, before looking at Rylie.

"....and can you please stop hurting her?"

"And due to our family history, we Fyrane's are not allowed to be associated with a phoenix." She then said. "There are very few that have been allowed to associate with them."

"If... if Lindsay can die over and over again... and... and the mana goes to ME... over and over again..." he said, trailing off and looking at his body.

"Ohhhhhhhh no..." he muttered.

"I get the feeling I'm at risk of becoming a monster." he concluded.
