"All right." he said.

"I got it." he told her.

"No stooping to their level and no going out of my way and blah blah blah." he muttered... though he was already starting to make plans in his mind.

"Anyway!" he then said.

"I need to mend you up so you CAN deal with just homecare." he told her.

Desiree nodded, but didn't say anything for the moment. She knew he was right.

But at the same time, she didn't even know if she could go home.

If they found her there, then the chances were quite good that they found her home too, and Desiree wasn't stupid enough to believe that it was definite they hadn't.

"Hm." he mumbled.

"Do you want to stay with Kalin and me?" he asked.

"We have plenty of room." he offered.

"Or we can put you up temporarily in a hotel somewhere." he offered further.

"If you'd feel safer."

"I... well, I don't know how big a target I have on my back, and while I realise that you two could most likely take care of yourselves... I also realise that isn't a guarantee." She continued.

"I would much prefer not putting you two in any potential danger."

"But I also know that she cannot do everything." She added before sighing lightly - and even thatmake her cough a lot.

"I ... just... I really hope this works...' She said quietly, honest fear in her voice. Those that had orchestrated this were most certainly known to terrify her.

"It's... It's Mothers. She's the one who decided to have a child with a hunter." She added, not thinking of how he wasn't aware of much regarding her family, or genetics.

"Uh..." he stammered.

"Wait, what?" he asked.

"Ok, admittedly, I don't know much about your past, and I've only recently become your family doctor, but... what?" he continued.

"With a hunter?" he asked her.

"You're the child of a hunter?"

Desiree's complexion seemed to pale before she just sighed, again, and coughing with a wince.

'. . . yes." She told him simply. She didn't say much else beyond that, as she didn't know what to say.

"I am." She added. "It's part of why they are after me. Literal genetics."

"Well... I can certainly understand being hunted because of genetics." he told her.

"Literally, as well." he continued.

"But... a mage that's the child of a hunter? Wow." he said further.

"That IS a rarity."

Desiree just nodded.

"I... really am a rarity." she admitted.

"Might as well lay all the cards on the table." She muttered before looking to Rene.

"I'm a hunter." She told him honestly.

"I'm at war with myself every single day, but I manage." She added. She would not be surprised, at all, if he didn't believe her, as she really didn't show any hunter traits as far as he knew.

Rene paused when she said that.

"....what?" he asked.

"At... war with yourself?" he asked further.

"How... how do you mean?" he asked her.

"You mean mentally? Because you're the child of a hunter, and have mana...?" he continued.

He had a feeling there was more to it than that... but what did she mean, exactly?

Where was this going?

Desiree just looked to Rene before sighing.

'Becuase I have mana hunter genetics that hate the mana based genetics." She told him simply.

"I am, genetically, a mana hunter." She continued, wondering if he knew what that meant.

"Not acquired, not anything. I was born a hunter. Was being raised as one as much as they could with me being deaf, until my mana made itself known."

"...genetically... a mana hunter..." he said.

He then looked at her... right at her.

"What is it?" he asked.

"What was your line 'blessed' with?" he asked her.

"What 'gift' did you receive?"

"Good, you are aware." She commented. "There's more than one reason why I had half my face." She added before hooking the hair that was there behind her ear. She revealed the scarring that he had been told about, but hadn't properly seen, and could easily understand why it was that hse kept them hidden. As she opened her eyes and looked to Rene though, he was able to feel something almost seem to pierce through him and it took a second for him to realise what it was.

It was the extremely light blue eye that she had, that she kept hidden.

Rene visibly flinched from seeing the eye... and the eye seeing him.

He wanted to take a step back, but he held his ground.

"....." he was silent, looking at it. Staring into it.

"I see." he said.

"So THAT'S what it is." he muttered.

"The Eye of Judgement."

"Renamed to the Discerning Eye." Desiree told him as she let her hair fall in front of her face again.

"Since a mage acquired it." She added.

"And since it's been a bit altered." She took a break, wincing. "Because it's now nothing more than an identifier for what others are. Nothing more, nothing less."
