According to that picture, yams look like normal potatoes to me.
I looked online and apparently in America we call soft sweet potatoes “yams” because yams are from Africa and African slaves called sweet potatoes “yam” because they looked the similar. Then harder varieties of sweet potatoes came to American markets and we all started using “yam” for the soft ones
