@CooperationIsKey: I make it up as I go. I believe in everything and nothing on a whim. God is real but he's like an abusive boyfriend so I'll gladly throw down with the old gods instead XD

@CooperationIsKey: Its honestly just a bunch of nonsense that I only take half seriously, but its pretty opposite to popular religious beliefs. I just like to have fun :p

@CooperationIsKey: Same. And now I'm a discordian Chaos magician so I guess they were either right or their efforts were fruitless

You just reminded me I had an ankh phase in middleschool. I think I let some super religious friend talk me out of wearing them BUT I SHOULD HAVE NOT LISTENED, for many reasons, but mostly because it would have gone so well with my ubergoth phase.

I had a lot of the same problems with retail that you do. I lucked my way into a comic book store job and it fit me so well for the following reasons:

It was a pretty low-traffic store most days compared to a grocery store for instance. New-comic-day saw a lot of traffic, but I can handle one busy day out of a week just fine. Both myself and the customers loved what was being sold. There were virtually no unhappy or impatient customers, and I could really get into talking about said products all day.. I didn't ever have to fake enthusiasm. It was a small business and the owners were REAL people... they never expected me to show up sick or work overtime constantly like big chain stores do. If I ever needed a mental health day, if my narcolepsy was bad, if I had a migraine, etc, nobody got mad that I didn't come in. I was even encouraged to take care of myself. There was also plenty to do other than running a register or stocking shelves, so I got to exercise my brain a lot more, which is important for my sanity.

Perhaps if you could find something more small-business styled, something related to personal interests, you too could find a better fit?

Also, don't stress too much about getting higher learning. My husband went to college and could never find a job related to what he learned. When he worked as a janitor (another decent job that isn't retail) he worked alongside actual lawyers that couldn't get by in their chosen profession either... Not that I'm dogging on higher education, just pointing out that its not always the solution everyone claims it to be. Hubby is a construction plumber now. Just joined a union and makes an unbelievable $40 an hour... so trade-skill style work is lucrative as well, but I personally could not do the stuff he does so I understand if that's not an option for you.

Ooh, there is one I've been waiting for the demo of: Growing up. It looks like something more casual I can play while I watch my daughter, but not so casual its barely a game lol

@vengeance: Oh snap. I am now! My favorite demo from the recent past was for Black Skylands.

@milkshake: There's this horrible video on youtube I like to quote in situations like these: "not my chair, not my problem." I'd say, focus on you and your SO. Some folks can only be helped if they want it. If you ever visit, you can make sure the animals feel love and affection at the very least. If you had the energy to invest, you could call around and ask advice from humane pet rescue services, or even councilors for the family member in question... but they would have to be willing to cooperate for it to go smoothly at all. BUT, especially if you are pregnant (I hope I got that right lol), you need to focus on you. Any extra stress should be avoided until your kid is like.... 20 or something.

My dear, I am so sorry you had to go through this. YOU ARE SO STRONG.

I can relate on a few levels here. My mother hoards things and animals in what is basically a double-wide trailer. Things were pretty bad before my dad passed away and they are surely worse now. Not only does she have around the same amount of dogs, she keeps 3 to 5 cats in ONE ROOM, there are probably (caged) rats, other random small critters, she feeds the local stray cats and raccoons, etc.... but she also has a MICE INFESTATION. She refuses to have anyone come take care of it because she is afraid if anyone sees her house, and how the animals use the bathroom anywhere, it will be condemned. She also lives with and cares for her mother, a horrid woman whom I want to say is worse than what you described above (but this isn't a contest, I just really hate her lol.) While my mum is a great human with so much love to give, I understand that she is working through a deep depression, so I too find myself at odds with how to handle the situation. If I had not gotten out of there when I did, I'd be so miserable... and probably really sick.

So... I'm proud of both you and myself, for finding the strength and means to get out of that sort of situation. I wish I could offer advice on what to do about the animals. If I were in a position where I could not relate to your story, I'd say call a professional to take the animals away. However, I can't even bring myself to do something like that with my own mother. If you do decide to find help for them, keep in mind that animal shelters are not always the best option, because they could just decide to put them down to save trouble.
