The man in front of her looked young, but Adira got the distinct impression that he spoke like someone far older. She had only heard old men, in their seventies or eighties, speak the way he did. She thought it equally as odd as it was charming. She also noted the fact that she didn't seem to remember seeing him before. She was no stranger to this town, and her abusive home situation often brought her out to the market until late in the night. She found him intriguing.

"Well, he didn't say anything about that," she said. "But if it's an assortment, and you're regular customer, he might have packed it and put it somewhere. Please wait here for a minute, sir. I'll go and check."

She went around the back by the storage and looked until she found a box wrapped in brown paper and tied with a string, with the name 'Allen' written on it. She picked it up and took it back out front.

"Here's your package, sir," she said, cheerfully.

By the time Ezra was done with dinner, he was exhausted to the point of wanting to collapse right there on the street, never mind the rain that was pouring hard and threatening to freeze anyone who stood out in it for too long. Time and time again, he had asked his mother not to set up these meetings with women she considered to be eligible bachelorettes, but she never listened. Coming away from these meetings, smiling and nodding along politely while possibly saying a charming line or two (always aimed at the parents, never the bachelorette), was mentally draining. He'd much rather be at the art gallery working, or in his studio, painting something.

He was the last to leave, waving politely at the ones who went home, one by one. He sighed, thankful that it was over. He would have to have a chat with his mother about springing surprises on him like that.

Something flickered in him, some sort of instinct or intuition, he wasn't sure. But it made him turn his head to look at the wall, behind which that figure had disappeared earlier. He looked at the street; the valet was going to take a while to show up with his car. He walked over to the side, and saw a woman crouched down, freezing.

"Oh my goodness," he immediately removed his blazer and wrapped her in it, hoping it would keep her warm. "Miss, are you alright?"

@whimsy: I'm not sure because of the covid spike, but we'll see.
Posted in CycloneKira's Mood Checker + Chat Posted 3 years ago
@whimsy: It pretty much is, I think, except in my view it shouldn't be getting this bad. I've had mood swings before too, but they were never so bad that it's impossible for me to lift a finger to do anything, or feel like shutting myself up in a closed room and not interact with anyone.

@whimsy: Hard to say. Sometimes it's one, sometimes it's the other. But lately, it's been hitting me hard before my period begins, and then it all but disappears on day one.

A customer had walked in, and greeted Mr Tanner, although he wasn't there. Adira looked up to see a boy, probably her age, or a couple years older at best. On closer inspection, she realized that he couldn't see. Oh no, she thought. Immediately, she went forward to help him.

"I'm sorry, but Mr Tanner is in the back managing his accounts," she said. "I'm taking care of things out front for now, though. How can I help you, sir?" Her tone remained cheerful and pleasant as she spoke to him.

The car pulled up in front of the restaurant, and Ezra got out, ready to go in. He briefly saw a figure dart past and beyond the side of the restaurant, disappearing behind the wall. It had happened too quickly, and he couldn't get a good look at them, whoever they were. Ezra looked in that direction; he thought he may have vaguely made out long, dark locks. Realizing he was going to keep his parents waiting, he walked inside.

His parents smiled on seeing him, but the smile Ezra returned was only half hearted, for at the same table were three other people. He recognized them to be a name partner of the law firm his father was another name partner of. Gambrell, Martin and Channing LLP. The one seated at the table was Harvey Gambrell, and he was seated next to his wife and eligible daughter. Ezra could see where this was going, and he didn't like it. He sat at the table, giving everyone his greetings, and prepared himself for what was probably going to be a long dinner.

@whimsy: Before my period hit. They were nearly gone on my first day.

Adira was walking around the marketplace, just biding her time until midnight, when she knew her aunt and cousins would fall asleep. She had run out after a fight that had turned a little violent; her cousin had found college brochures in her bag for schools that were out of state, and her aunt had accused her of being an ungrateful wretch who wanted to run away from home. Her aunt hadn't been wrong. Adira did want to leave and go to college outside of school.

The marketplace was a friendlier place than the place that was supposed to be her home. The butcher kept watch over her while she loitered, and his wife often came out to give her a snack or a drink if she seemed hungry. She wished her friends could come to her, but they would be home and fast asleep by now. She could only see them at school tomorrow.

She walked over to the plant nursery, which vegetable seeds, flowers, pots, and even medicinal herbs. "Hey Mr Tanner!" she greeted the owner of the nursery cheerfully. "Can I help you with anything?"

For the next few minutes, Adira was organizing Mr Tanner's plants for him, making sure the pots were easy to walk through, and plants of the same type were grouped together. If any customers came along, she tended to them too.

It was night, and Ezra was closing up the gallery to go home. He was the Director of the Ainsley Museum of Art, where they were planning another exhibit by a well-respected elderly artist, who chose to be known simply as Ahn. After locking up the place, he got into his car, which was waiting for him outside the gate.

His phone buzzed; he fished it out to see a text from his mother.

Mother: We're here at the Radisson, honey. When will you be here?

Ezra had promised to meet his parents for dinner that night. He typed out his response:

Ezra: Just locked up. I'll be there in fifteen.

The car had run into some traffic, but he wasn't very concerned. He would still reach on time.

@ava: The only grief my period is giving me right now is the cramping kind, which although bad, is still more manageable than mood swings, somehow.

Adira Wellesley
17 years old

Bio: Adira is a cheerful and curious girl, in spite of what she's been through in life. As a young girl, her father left the house one night for work and never came back. All she was ever told about him was that he was a hunter of sorts. A few years later, when she was ten, her mother succumbed to illness and died, leaving her in the care of her mother's nasty sister and her nastier children. But she keeps her spirits up, doing well at school and maintaining a reasonably good social life, with her two best friends Lillian and Ella.
