The poor girl seems so jumpy.

Raisa was sympathetic, and wanted to calm her down and let her feel comfortable. She led the young woman to a room, freshly made up with soft blankets, a pile of neatly folded clothes sitting on the bed.

"The shower is in there, and I managed to get some comfortable clothes for you," she said to her, a kind smile on her face. "Don't be shy, and ask if there's anything you need, okay? There are fresh towels in the bathroom, so you can just take one off the rack."

--------

Ezra had stepped into the shower, washing off all the rain from his hair and skin, letting his thoughts run free. Most of them were about Maddie. Everything about her, and the way he acted around her, puzzled him. Right from his odd instinct to peer behind the wall, where she'd been hiding, to the impulsive act of bringing her home. He wasn't himself, and somehow, it felt more like his own self than nearly anything else he'd done in his entire life. Sighing, he turned off the shower, stepped out and got dressed in home clothes, a grey V-neck t-shirt and black sweatpants, ready to sit down for dinner.

"I'm not sure I like the idea of you living anywhere unless we know who it is," Lillian said, trying to keep her voice as low as possible. "Your aunt's a nasty piece of work, but at least we know where her house is, and we can find you if we think something's wrong."

"He seems harmless enough to me," Ella mused, looking in his direction. "He can't even see, so it's not like he'd pose much of a threat to Adi, right?"

At that moment, Adira saw him walk in their direction, and then sit down on a bench close to them. The girls were silent for a moment, before Lillian spoke up, her voice as hushed as possible, so that he wouldn't hear.

"Go talk to him," she said. "Tell him you need more details to decide whether you can take him up on his offer or not. It's only fair, he'll understand. And we'll stay quiet in the background, we just want to listen to him and see if he's suspicious or not."

The suspicion aside, Adira did think she needed to talk more about this. She quietly stood up and walked over to him.

"Hello, Mr Allen," she said, tentatively. "It's me, Adira."

Ezra walked into his house, with Maddie following close behind him. He unlocked the door and opened it, letting her go through first, before shutting the door behind him. It was still pouring outside, and it didn't look like it would let up for at least a few hours. He ran his hand through his hair, trying to get the excess water off, and turned to take off the coat that Maddie was wearing, the one he'd given her earlier. Hanging it up on the coat rack, he called out for Raisa.

"Master Ezra, how many times have I told you not to leave wet things on the coat rack!" Raisa scolded him the second she came into view from the direction of the kitchen and took the coat off the rack, while Ezra only chuckled sheepishly. She then turned to Maddie and smiled warmly.

"This way, Miss," she said, taking hold of Maddie's arm. "I have some warm clothes for you, and there's a shower if you'd like to wash."

She then turned to Ezra. "Dinner will be ready in half an hour."

Adira was talking to her friends when she spotted someone coming into the park and walk around. She hushed them both, and silently pointed at him, showing them who he was. Lillian and Ella looked over and gaped, turning to look back at her.

"He offered to let you stay with him?" Lillian asked, clearly referring to how good looking he was. Adira nodded. She pulled her friends closer, motioning for them to talk in whispers, so that there was no way he could hear them.

"He said I could come and go as I pleased, and help Mr Tanner at the nursery like I usually do," she said. "I'd just have to take care of the house every now and then."

"Well, then where's his house?" Ella asked. Adira shrugged.

"I have no idea." She looked at her friends. "What do you guys think I should do?"

Ezra considered what she was saying carefully. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see that she clearly didn't believe that was the case. But he understood her; he was still a stranger after all, and there was only so much she'd be comfortable telling him. So he dropped it.

"We're here," he said, as the car pulled up to the driveway of his house. He parked the car in its designated spot in front of the house.

He stepped out of the car and walked to Maddie's side, opening the door for her.

Adira watched him walk away, feeling equally relieved at not having to make a decision right away, but also sad to see him go. She then went back to Mr Tanner's shop, asking for his permission to sleep at the nursery for the night, which he gave readily. She was afraid of going home, for she didn't want to go home to fall into the violent clutches of her aunt again. She'd sleep here for the night, and then go over to Lillian's and get ready for school.

When morning came, she left Mr Tanner and walked to Lillian's, where she had managed to leave a few sets of clothes to wear. She usually kept some clothes at Ella's place too, just in case Lill couldn't have her over.

After school, the three girls sat in the town park discussing things. She'd told them about Mr Allen, and the opportunities he presented.

Ezra kept listening to her, feeling like crap for having assumed something about this woman, but it disappeared when she mentioned her house getting destroyed. His eyes shot up in alarm and he looked at her.

"What do you mean, destroyed?" he asked, disbelief evident in his voice. "Why would someone want to destroy your house?"

Adira thought about it for a moment. If she really took this man up on his offer, it could be great. All her life, she'd had three wishes, that she believed would make her life way better: a way to deal with her aunt and her family, a part time job so she could earn after school, and a boyfriend. These were three wishes that she often found herself praying for whenever she chose to believe in a God.

If she did take up his offer, two of those boxes would be checked: the part time job and the opportunity to leave her aunt. But there was a lot she'd need help with, if she truly was going to make the move. Besides...

She looked at him. He lived alone, and he'd said he needed someone to look after his house. She wasn't entirely sure about staying with a man alone, even if she wouldn't be there all the time, and even if it meant escaping her aunt.

"Can I take some time to think about it?" she asked him. "For now, I'll help you take these back home." She took the box of herbs from his hands. "Mr Tanner, I'm going to help Mr Allen take this back home."
