You can add people to a friendlist to chat with them.
You can join servers with other people to chat with them.
They have voice chatting and screensharing too.
Really... I've always thought of it as an updated/upgraded skype

@inatlaka: I moved from skype to discord shortly after Microsoft bought the program (skype), because some of their changes (I can't remember WHAT they were now) just ... pissed me off.
