Forums General Chit-Chat Recent Equifax Security Breach-What's next PSA

Donator — She/her Posted 7 years ago ( 2017/09/9 07:36:30 )
Hey everyone. So that happened today. (If you don't know about it feel free to google it)

I'm here to let you know that if you do nothing else, place an initial 90 day fraud alert on your file. This is free and will require lenders to contact you if someone (including yourself) tries to apply for credit. Government info. You only have to do this with one bureau in order for the alert to be placed on all three, and it should take less than 5 minutes:
Equifax OR 1-888-766-0008
Experian OR 1-888-397-3742
Transunion OR 1-800-680-7289

I just did this by calling Transunion. I didn't spend any money (although at the end they tried to sell me a service, but just say no to it twice).

And mods, if this isn't in the right place please feel free to move it. I thought that this was a good place for it since we aren't really discussing it and this is a PSA. ^^;

Lily:
A big PSA to add onto this PSA: If you try to use Equifax's "find out if your data is breached" option on their website, agreeing to their terms and accessing that information forces you to waive your right to sue them!

Do NOT use Equifax's tool to see if your data was part of the security breach!!
Yes you don't want to do that. Although they have changed their website to where that doesn't happen anymore I still just called one of the other two places and did it on the phone through an automated system. I didn't have to talk to anyone.

Thanks @Totalanimefan: I already let my credit companies know and the banks I use have already put all accounts on alert as a precaution.

@Concentricity: Yay! That's great that you were proactive and did that! I don't understand the amount of people that don't try to protect themselves.

@Totalanimefan: I have too many assets that I worry about all the time. ._. Equifax should let us have free credit checks that don't affect our credit score because of this nonsense.

@Concentricity: Duh, and we should have more than that for free. I also have good credit and more than one CC. I need to be on the lookout.

@Totalanimefan: Same. ._. I'd like to get another card, but because my current cards aren't THAT old, they would dock me. I just like the benefits Visa has and I only have MasterCard and Discover right now.

@Concentricity: No, don't get a new card. That would hurt your credit ^^;
