みんなこんにちは! Hello All!

I decided to make a hangout for people that want to learn Japanese, or know Japanese. This will be a place to chat in Japanese as well, but you must post an English translation with your post and make it obvious which parts of Japanese go with what you wrote in English. Makes it easier for the MODs of Voltra.

自己紹介 (じこしょうかい) にしましょうね!Let's do a self introduction!
I am not a native speaker, and at times I can still make mistakes like all of us. But I did learn Japanese at the college/university level from both native and linguistic speakers. I also have friends that only speak Japanese and I have been to Japan. My husband also learned Japanese at the same University and we do speak it together sometimes. I listen to Japanese daily. My Kanji could use some work haha.

If you can think of a better post layout or topic order, let me know!

Learning Resources - Textbooks and guides

Genki Textbook PDF - https://ia800201.us.archive.org/29/items/Genki/Genki%20-%20Elementary%20Japanese%20I_text.pdf
I highly recommend Genki. This is a textbook they use in classrooms and it is very good. If you wanted to have a physical version, I have seen them on Amazon for a reasonable price. You can also buy it used.

Tofugu - https://www.tofugu.com/learn-japanese/
A more casual website for helping you learn Japanese from nothing. You don't need any background knowledge for Genki either, it's just more structured and complete.

Doulingo - An app you can download from the App Store. I do have some problems with it, but 95% of the time it's a great resource. Also free but you can pay for a plus version.

Japanese Dictionary - This is a must have! I use it all the time and I have had it on my phone for 10+ years!
Company website with App Store links https://japaneseapp.com

Lesson of the month:

https://www.tofugu.com/japanese/learn-hiragana/?utm_source=Tofugu&utm_medium=Article&utm_campaign=Learn%20Japanese
I think this is a good starting point. It's important to know how to say the words you are speaking and reading. I was going to start with pronunciation but I think this one might be better.

If you are using Genki, here are some basic words and listening
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH1bLCZeaiU
The acting in this is funny. All of these grammar points and vocabulary are important. I recommend listening to it and copying the sounds as best you can. You will need to listen to it a lot and repeat it a lot. Nothing about language learning is only done once.

Learning Kana/Writing Exercises

This is hard in Japanese but it's a must. There are too many words with the same syllables in Japanese. It will also help you read things if you ever go to Japan.

@neon: Real kana? I've never heard of that website. Because I learned in person at a school, I'm not really up to date with all the possible online resources. I could always get better with my katakana. I still struggle with that years later.
Do you know both hiragana and katakana?

@AlexiAkira: It's totally ok to not use Kanji! I don't even know all of those Kanji you used.

I would focus on the basics for know. I think you are trying to get ahead of yourself before you know the grammar.
That word you used for myself I think is like older Japanese? I've never seen it before and I had to use my dictionary lol

For Slacking Off maybe you could use サボル (Saboru) from the English word sabotage. Which in Japanese means to slack off or skip class/something important.
And normally Jibun 自分 is used to talk about one's self. Although there are others.

I think if you use some of the resources in this thread it could really help you with some of the blocks you are facing. It's totally normal in a language. I still face them all the time.

日本語を練習したいよ!
Nihongo wo Renshuu shitai yo

I want to practice Japanese!
Nihon = Japanese + Go = Language. So Japanese language.
Renshuu is to practice
Suru is to do. Shitai is to want to to.
Yo at the end of a sentence is an emphasis. I emphasized that I wanted to do the thing.

@neon: Thank you for the extra resources! I should add them to the list.
Also I did use RealKana while you were away. I like it. I used it for practice.

Heck is too hard anyway. I swear I only know it cause it's my first language.
If I was Japanese trying to learn English, I wouldn't stand a chance.

Edit: See I even forgot to type English after I said Heck. I can't be trusted with English. lol
