@Saeyra: I was never aware that "Not all those who wander are lost" was from a poem. A quite excellent one, at that. You definitely learn something new every day. Thank you for sharing that.

(I always catch myself reciting the following poem from time to time, so I guess it's as good as any to share.)

Antigonish
by William Hughes Mearns

Yesterday upon the stair
I met a man who wasn’t there
He wasn’t there again today
I wish, I wish he’d go away

When I came home last night at three
The man was waiting there for me
But when I looked around the hall
I couldn’t see him there at all!
Go away, go away, don’t you come back any more!
Go away, go away, and please don’t slam the door

Last night I saw upon the stair
A little man who wasn’t there
He wasn’t there again today
Oh, how I wish he’d go away

"Arsenic (The Luna Sequence Remix)" by Obsidian FX

@Lady Luna: It's an interesting story, for sure. If you ever do revise it, I'd love to read that as well.
And I agree with your assessment. I'm never sure how to go about introducing my characters and their world. The only advice I seem to remember is to ensure to grab your reader's attention from the get go.

Bumping this as it fell off the first page. Also went ahead and added the characters I'm most likely to roleplay as in my opening post.

@Lady Luna: I'm up for reading some of your works.

@sunny: Yeah, I was actually a bit surprised to learn they are more like harpies than mermaids in terms of physical appearance. Also, apparently "Sirens were fated to die if someone heard their singing and escaped them, and that after Odysseus passed by they therefore flung themselves into the water and perished." That last part further drives home the point that they are not aquatic. I'm unsure of how I want to incorporate their weakness, but I'm glad to see they have one, as I'd never heard of them having one before.

A poem on gorgons would be interesting, by the way.

@Saeyra: Ah, I have that same problem too, heh. Like with sunny's poem, I want to tell her why I like it, but it's hard to explain, so I just have to settle with saying that I do like it. As for that book, I must admit I haven't read it. I swear I find my collection of Poe and then immediately lose it. Thankfully I seem to have found the story online, so I'll be adding that to my list of things to read. Personally, one of my favorite stories of his would be The Masque of the Red Death.

"Killer Queen" by Queen

@sunny: I thoroughly enjoyed your poem. What exactly is the challenge you wrote it for?
As for male sirens: "Originally, Sirens were shown to be male or female, but the male Siren disappeared from art around fifth century BC."

"You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" by The Offspring

Posted in The Writer's Cafe - OPEN! Posted 6 years ago

@sunny: I'm currently doing research and didn't realize how entangled siren and mermaid mythology was. I'm still pretty adamant about my character being a siren, but it looks like I might have to change him some to ensure he is indeed a proper one.

@Saeyra: Out of curiosity, is poetry your preferred literature? I'm not as avid a reader as I used to be, but even when I was constantly reading I never really sought out poetry (aside from Poe).
