I know I'm a bit late to the party, but here's what I've come up with.

A set of creaky mechanical wings. They can unfold/fold themselves at the wearer's command.
Straps to the user with a set of straps and buckles.

Magnifying specs. Moveable lenses on the right side allow for different strengths of magnification.
