@User: I have the same difficulty! My drawings / paintings always end up flat or washed-out because I'm so afraid to use too much colour and make things look muddy / unnatural. I've always been kind of poor with colours and values, actually. A lot of it is my own hang ups, I just need to let it all go and let myself do my thing but for some reason my brain is too much of a jerk. c': I think you're definitely on the right track, your shadows look good!
Not sure if it would help with pixeling, but, light studies are a useful tool for exercising your shading skill. It's basically drawing from a reference, but instead of focusing on details like features, you focus on blocks of value, and differentiating them from one another. c:
