@ArsenicAttitude: Oh that item. Yes, you can wear it. It's a background item. I thought that you meant with the volts you bought a common orb in the shops lol
If you do get an item where you have to open it to get an item, you go to the inventory tab in your invo screen and then go to consumables tab and then click on the item you want to open.

@ArsenicAttitude: yup, it's the same for the crates and during events at the end there are 'goodie bags' you can buy and open and you can pick which event item you would like to have.
