I struggle with making avis I like as well. I just try to make the colors match and have some kind of theme, but I often make avis that I end up not using because they don't turn out good enough

Like everyone have said, I too struggle with making a good avatar and matching the colours would probably help depending on what avatar you wanted to go for.
I try to gravitate towards a color combo, or if an item really draws me in, I will start with that.
Sometimes it takes me a while to tweak things how I like.
Do you prefer to layer? Sometimes I will utilize the shops to help show me how items layer.
