@Totalanimefan: the town I grew up in expensive but not as expensive as the centrum of Amsterdam. You need to be really rich to be able to buy a house there.

@Tuijp: yeah it’s ridiculous how much housing costs around the world. We need to build more of it in the in demand places.

@Totalanimefan: social housing has waiting lists here. In the town I grew up, the waiting list is around 7 years and, in Amsterdam, it’s 8-10 years.

@Tuijp: same with the area I live in. 100 units will be up for grabs but almost 7,000 will enter the lottery for it. It’s insane. You probably know this, but I fight for more housing in my city. I think it’s wrong that we don’t build enough housing. Like 100 units doesn’t solve the problem, but there people are bitching that something 2 miles away from them are going to change their neighborhood and let the ‘poor’ in. (Read highly educated young people that can’t afford anything else).

This is literally a slide that someone had during a meeting about turning an abandoned mall into housing, rental, office and a park. They would literally rather have it be a mall with nothing in it than to be a beautiful, new, mixed use downtown.

@Totalanimefan: here they don’t really build at all. There is a small neighbourhood being build with about 20 houses and none of them is to rent.

...some people

@Tuijp: oh that was the number for San Francisco. In my city it was 19 units. And it was only for seniors.

@Totalanimefan: there are empy houses at the retirement home and they just let them be empty.
They’re small houses and perfect for beginners.

@Tuijp: I know it would be so perfect! I know that my husband and I only need 1 bedroom and we are perfectly happy with that!

@Totalanimefan: those houses have 2 bedrooms, a bathroom and a garden front and back.
The old people either stay in their house longer or move into the main building with apartments right away.
