Disney turned him into a doofy villain because he thought it'd be far harder to make the audience sympathize with a snake.
But with having said that, the 60's Disney adaptation deviates a whoooole lot from tge source material.
Back to the topic of villanious snakes, Rattlesnake Jake was cool.
